Filtration occurs as the process water flows through compressible media, which has been compressed laterally by the head pressure of the influent water on a flexible bladder. The lateral compression of the media provides a vertical porosity gradient, allowing large particles to be captured at the top and small particles near the bottom, utilizing the full depth of the media bed.
